Film VersionsThis is a featured page

Wuthering Heights, as a classic romance story, has been depicted in thirteen different film versions in the last century, including a live TV broadcast, a Spanish version, a Japanese version, a French version, two television series, and one unfortunate MTV musical version.
All enticing summaries include a tale of love, obsessions, conflicting passions, revenge, drama, etc etc.
The best version is said to be the 1939 production by William Wyler. It has been called the "definitive version" and a "classic," even though it only goes up to Chapter 17. It starred Merle Oberon has Cathy, Laurence Olivier as Heathcliff, and David Niven as Edgar. The movie was awarded an Oscar for "Best Cinematography, Black-and-White" and was nominated for an Academy Award for "Best Picture."
In 1970, Monty Python's Flying Circus Season 2, Episode # 15 included a sketch of "The Semaphore version of Wuthering Heights."
In 2003, MTV pushed out a modernized and sexed up version of the love story, but did spark the interest of teenagers in Emily Bronte's best work.
As of 2006, a new adaptation is in the works. Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp have been mentioned as probable cast members in the three-hour film, scheduled to come out in 2008. It is to be directed by Peter Bowker, as M. Night Shyamalan turned it down in order to produce The Village (which is said to be influenced by the book anyway).
