Other Versions of King ArthurThis is a featured page

The Mists of Avalon The Mists of avalon are based in Arthurian legend except based around the womens perspective esp. Arthur's sister Morgaine.(1)

TNT Movie producers made a mini-series of Mist of Avalon of Marion Zimmer Bradley's novel. The screen write was by Gavin Scott. (3)

The Once and Future King

The Once and Future King is a novel by T.H. White that tells the story of Arthur, the knights of the round table, Lancelot, and the holy grail. It goes into great depth around Arthur's childhood. In it, he is tutored by Merlin, who tranforms Arthur into different animals to learn the ways of the world. Also, Merlin interestingly lives through time backwards, so he knows some of the future but often doesn't know the past.(2)

Steinbeck's Version

John Steinbeck wrote The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights in the few years before the end of his life. He was using Malory's original script to rewrite the story into more modern vernacular to make it more accessible to new readers. Regrettably, it was never finished (he stopped soon before he died) and was published posthumously in 1976. (6)

The Hobbit

Although Tolkein's The Hobbit is not directly correlated to the tale of King Arthur, it is believed to have many similar aspects. Gandalf takes the place of Merlin, the 13 dwarves act as the Knights of the Round Table, and the hobbit Bilbo Baggins takes the place of Arthur. This is not necessarily factual, but an interesting theory that is further analyzed here (7).

The Arthur Trilogy

An interesting version of King Arthur is that of the Arthur Trilogy by Kevin Crossley-Holland. In it a boy, named Arthur, whose life eerily resembles that of King Arthur, is given an obsidian stone by Merlin. The stone soon begins to show him the story of King Arthur, and as he watches the mysteries of Arthur's life unfold the mysteries of his own life also unfold. There are three books, beginning with The Seeing Stone.(8)

Tortilla Flat

This is a John Steinbeck book where instead of knights of Arthur, the characters are represented by drunken Mexicans who love to party. Their journeys are not as difficult or noble as the ones in Arthur but it resembles the Arthurian legend none the less.(9)

Mark Twain's Version

A Conneticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court is an interesting tale of Hank Morgan, a Conneticut Yankee who is known as/called "The Boss". Hank finds himself transported to the court of King Arthur. He uses his modern day language and education to pass himself off as a great magician, to get himself out of all sorts of amusing situations, and to advance the cultural and technological status of the nation. In this book, Twain uses the Boss to express many views that are often contradictory on Democracy and Monarchy, Nature vs. Nurture, taxation, slavery, the origins of the German language, the nature of marriage and most powerfully, death. In Music

Multiple groups have styled songs or even entire albums around the tale of King Arthur. There have been two notable concept albums (albums styled around a single unified theme or lyrical or musical pattern) directly relating to King Arthur:

Progressive Rock Pianist Rick Wakeman's "Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table" has a 6-song list with titles such as Sir Lancelot and the Black Knight, Guinevere, and Arthur. (11)

German power metal band Gravedigger released an album entitled, "Excalibur", which contains songs with titles such as The Secrets of Merlin, Morgan Le Fay, and Tristan's Fate. (12)
